Uit oude documenten blijkt dat de mirre zo waardevol werd geacht dat hij soms op zijn gewicht in goud werd geschat. De essentiële olie van mirre is afkomstig van de gomachtige hars van de kleine, doornige mirreboom en wordt al eeuwenlang gebruikt voor zijn interne en externe gezondheidsvoordelen. Mirre is door de geschiedenis heen gebruikt als parfum, wierook en gezondheidsmiddel. Het werd ook gebruikt bij balseming en religieuze ceremonies.
